Do you need a referral to see an acupuncturist?

You may not need a referral to see an acupuncture practitioner. Some states, such as California and New York, allow you to see an acupuncturist without a referral. The majority of people who see an acupuncturist for the first time do not need a referral. However, if you are seeing an acupuncturist to address chronic pain or other conditions that have been present for months or years, it is important to discuss the situation with your doctor before seeking treatment.

In California and New York, you can visit an acupuncturist without a referral. However, if you live in a state that requires one, there are ways to get one. For example, if your insurance company requires it for coverage of acupuncture treatments or if the doctor who is referring you has the authority to do so.
