Egg costs have increased dramatically as of February 2025 for several reasons.
1. Bird Flu Outbreak: To stop the virus from spreading, millions of egg-laying hens have been culled due to a serious avian flu outbreak. More egg-producing birds have been sick since Januaryāroughly 14.7 millionāthan in 2023. As a result, the amount of eggs produced has decreased by 4.5% from the year before.Ā
2. Supply Chain Disruptions: Due to a sharp decline in the number of chickens that lay eggs, there is now more competition among buyers, which has raised prices. New York, the Midwest, and California have all seen increases in wholesale prices to $7.24, $6.84, and $8.35, respectively. Although somewhat lower, retail costs have nevertheless increased significantly.
3. Policy Decisions: The present administration's directives to eliminate more than 100 million chickens to combat avian flu have further reduced egg supplies, which has led to an increase in prices.
4. Trade levies: By upsetting supply chains and raising the cost of imported agricultural products, recent levies on imports from Canada and Mexico are predicted to worsen food inflation, notably egg prices.Ā
The national average for egg prices in December 2024 was $4.15 a dozen, with some regions seeing even higher prices due to these combined factors. Prices might continue to change as long as these problems exist because the situation is still fluid.
Bird Flu (禽ęµę, QĆn LiĆŗ GĒn) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Bird flu (avian influenza) is viewed in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as an external pathogenic invasion primarily caused by Wind, Heat, and Dampness toxins affecting the Lungs, Spleen, and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). TCM aims to strengthen immunity, clear toxins, and harmonize Qi to restore balance in the body.
1. TCM Pathogenesis of Bird Flu
š¬ A. External Wind-Heat Invasion
ā Symptoms ā Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches
ā Cause ā Wind-Heat pathogen enters the Lungs, impairing defensive Qi
š§ B. Damp-Heat Toxin in Lungs & Stomach
ā Symptoms ā High fever, nausea, vomiting, chest tightness, diarrhea
ā Cause ā Damp-Heat accumulation disrupts the digestive and respiratory systems
āļø C. Qi & Yin Deficiency with Heat
ā Symptoms ā Prolonged fever, dry cough, night sweats, fatigue, weak pulse
ā Cause ā Weak Wei Qi (immune system) allows pathogens to persist
2. TCM Herbal Treatment for Bird Flu
A. Early Stage ā Expelling Wind-Heat
š¹ Yin Qiao San (é¶ēæę£, Honeysuckle & Forsythia Powder) ā Clears Heat, detoxifies, relieves sore throat
š¹ Sang Ju Yin (ę”čé„®, Mulberry Leaf & Chrysanthemum Decoction) ā Treats cough, mild fever
B. Severe Stage ā Clearing Damp-Heat & Toxins
š¹ Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (é»čæč§£ęÆ걤, Coptis Detox Formula) ā Clears Heat & Fire toxins
š¹ Pu Ji Xiao Du Yin (ę®ęµę¶ęÆé„®, Universal Toxin-Expelling Formula) ā Treats swollen throat & fever
C. Recovery Stage ā Strengthening Qi & Yin
š¹ Sheng Mai San (ēčę£, Generate Pulse Powder) ā Restores Lung Qi & Yin
š¹ Ren Shen Bai Du San (äŗŗåč“„ęÆę£, Ginseng Detox Powder) ā Supports weak immune systems
3. Acupuncture & Acupressure for Bird Flu
š” Points to Reduce Fever & Expel Pathogens
ā LI-4 (Hegu, åč°·) ā Expels Wind & Heat
ā LU-7 (Lieque, åē¼ŗ) ā Opens Lungs, relieves cough
š« Points to Strengthen Immunity
ā ST-36 (Zusanli, č¶³äøé) ā Boosts Qi & resistance
ā SP-6 (Sanyinjiao, äøé“äŗ¤) ā Strengthens Spleen, clears Dampness
4. Diet Therapy for Bird Flu
ā Recommended Foods
ā Lung-Clearing ā Pear, white radish, lotus root, mung beans
ā Immune-Boosting ā Garlic, ginger, shiitake mushrooms, ginseng
ā Hydrating ā Herbal teas (honeysuckle, chrysanthemum, peppermint)
ā Foods to Avoid
š« Spicy & greasy food ā Aggravates Heat
š« Cold & raw foods ā Weakens digestion & immunity
5. Prevention & Lifestyle Advice
ā Wear a mask & avoid crowded areas to prevent Wind invasion
ā Drink warm herbal tea daily to strengthen immunity
ā Keep the body warm and avoid excessive sweating
The invasion of wind-heat and damp-heat poisons that harm the lungs, spleen, and wei qi is how TCM views avian flu. Herbs, acupuncture, and diet are used to improve immunity, eliminate toxins, and drive out germs.
